Hamburg 1939–

Otto and Ange are in love’s first flush as Nazism overruns the city. Jewish friends and misfits disappear, as their jazz parties are smashed nightly by the Hitler Youth. When Otto’s father starts work for architect Albert Speer, the lovers face an ultimatum that will land them in Moringen and Uckermark youth camps, in terrible danger.

Otto works in the mines – the same his father helps Speer organise for Total War – as his brother is conscripted east, towards a battle in Stalingrad that will change everything. While Ange unravels at Uckermark and the pair face typhus, starvation and interrogation by psychiatrists Ritter and Justin, what hopes can they keep?
